The table in the villa salon was supposed to be part of my idea for photographing Wikki K. By the time we finished, I was beginning to think it deserved a credit in Purple Beauty. :)

We were shooting at a beautiful villa in a tropical place, and I liked the idea of working with the table in the salon. It gave Wikki something to play with and gave me a starting point for the photographs. I thought she would use it nicely. She did much more than I expected.

Wikki has a quiet presence. She isn't a very talkative model, but when she does speak, there's something very cute about it. She has a unique, pure beauty too, and I wanted to photograph her in a way that let that come through. My plan for the table was simple: see what she might do with it, then follow her lead.

Well, she took that invitation seriously.

She made the table her own little stage, showing her beautiful figure with a confidence that caught me by surprise. I had been thinking of it as one part of the setting. Wikki seemed to see a whole photo session there. At some point, I could almost imagine the table asking for its own portfolio.

That was the fun for me behind the camera. I had brought an idea to the shoot, but Wikki gave me more to work with than I had pictured. Instead of trying to make her fit what was in my head, I could concentrate on photographing what she was giving me. The table stayed where it was; my expectations had to move a little.

And what a lovely contrast she has. In conversation, Wikki can be reserved, with that cute way of speaking that makes you want to listen. In front of the camera, she was completely at ease using the space around her. I enjoyed seeing that side of her, especially because it came from such a simple suggestion. There was no need to turn the salon into anything else. Wikki had already found plenty to do with what was right in front of us.

I think photographers sometimes get a little too attached to their plans. I certainly liked mine when we started. Beautiful villa, lovely model, table in the salon: what could go wrong? Nothing went wrong, of course. Wikki just made the idea better, which is a very pleasant way to discover that you weren't quite as clever as you thought. :)

That's what I remember most about making Purple Beauty. Not just Wikki's beauty, though she is truly striking, but the way she took an ordinary table and used it as a stage for herself. I was behind the camera, happy to let her take that idea further than I ever expected.

Thank you, Wikki. Next time I see a table, I'll try not to underestimate it.
