Betty Lang She Knows 2: The Moment Keeps Moving Backstage

Betty Lang She Knows 2 is the video version of She Knows 1, and that little change in format makes me feel the whole shoot differently. A photograph lets me choose the instant I want to keep. Video is less obedient. It lets the moment arrive in its own time, then asks me not to interrupt it. With Betty, that is exactly the fun of it. The title says she knows, and I spend a good deal of my time behind the camera wondering what, precisely, she knows that I do not.

When I think about She Knows 1, I think about the confidence of a still image. You can return to it, take your time, and make up your own story about the second before and the second after. I love that. It is one of the reasons I became a photographer. But the video has a different sort of nerve. There is no single frame to hide behind. Time keeps going, and whatever feeling we have found has to live there a little longer.

That sounds very serious, I know. It is not how I want to feel while I am making something with Betty. There is pleasure in noticing how quickly I start trying to direct everything, including the parts that are interesting because they cannot be pinned down. My job is to make choices, of course, but sometimes my best choice is to give a moment room. I have to remind myself of that more often than I would like to admit. Betty has a way of making that reminder feel less like a lesson and more like a game.

The name She Knows has always made me smile. It has that teasing little imbalance built into it: one person seems to be in on the joke, while the other is still catching up. As the person behind the camera, I am happy to be the one catching up. Chemistry is more interesting to me when it does not feel like a series of instructions followed perfectly. I want the sense that I am responding to a person, not just collecting the images I had in mind before we began.

That is also why making video changes my attention. With a still, I can be ruthless about a fraction of a second. I see something, I catch it, and the rest falls away. In motion, I have to care about what connects one instant to the next. The anticipation matters. So does the space after it. A feeling can become more charged simply because it has time to settle. I find that incredibly sexy, without needing to spell out every thought the camera might invite.

Of course, the photographer in me never entirely stops hunting for the perfect frame. He is a little stubborn. The director in me has to tell him, gently, to relax. This is not a competition between a photograph and a film, and She Knows 2 is not a new photo set pretending to be something else. It is the moving version of the idea behind She Knows 1. I like that the two versions can sit together, each offering a different way into the same atmosphere.

I also like what that asks of me personally. When I am working with someone whose presence draws me in, it is tempting to keep looking for the most obvious moment, the one that announces itself. But attraction is rarely that tidy. Sometimes it is in the feeling that I might miss something if I look away. Sometimes it is the simple, slightly ridiculous fact that I am meant to be thinking clearly about my work while enjoying the uncertainty of it. I can do both. Usually.

Betty makes that balance especially enjoyable. I do not want to turn her into a mystery for the sake of a clever title, because there is a real person at the center of all this. What stays with me is the pleasure of making something together and letting her presence shape how I watch. I bring my eye, my timing, and a fairly persistent curiosity. I also bring the occasional internal reminder not to get too pleased with my own ideas. That part is probably healthy.

So if you already know She Knows 1, this is my invitation to spend time with it another way. Let the image move. Notice how much can change when an instant is allowed to become a little stretch of time. That is what I keep coming back to with She Knows 2. I began with an idea I thought I understood, and the video makes me curious about it all over again. Maybe Betty knows. I am still watching.
