Ashly Rabbit & Dakota Doll · You Can Take It Backstage
Ashly Rabbit and Dakota Doll You Can Take It sounds like a challenge, doesn't it? The title has barely finished speaking and already I feel as if I should straighten up behind the camera. 😄
You can take it. Can I? Am I being challenged to keep up? To stay focused? As a director, I have to admit that a title like this makes my job sound a little more dangerous than it probably is.
That playful question is what I like about the video version of You Can Take It on VivThomas. A few simple words can set a mood without explaining everything. They leave room for a raised eyebrow, a private smile, and whatever the viewer decides that challenge means.
Of course, the person watching has the comfortable position. You can pause, lean back, take your time. I tend to think about what it means to be on the other side of the camera, where timing matters and you have to keep your attention on the moment. It is not quite so easy to look relaxed while your mind is busy making decisions.
Maybe that is why the title makes me laugh. It sounds confident enough for both of us.
With a video, there is another kind of pleasure in that question. A photograph asks you to imagine what happened just before or after the frame. Video lets time do some of that work. You stay with it, and the mood has a chance to change while you are watching. That is the part of directing I always find exciting: not just finding an image I like, but feeling how long to hold on to it.
And Ashly Rabbit and Dakota Doll? Their names beside that title make for an introduction with a wonderfully cheeky edge. I don't want to answer the challenge for you. It is much more fun to leave it hanging there for a moment.
You Can Take It. I hope my camera could. :)
