Dakota Doll in Don't Let Me Fade 1
Podcast:
The room was darker than I expected when we arrived. Heavy curtains, warm wood, almost no color anywhere and right in the middle of all that darkness was Dakota Doll. That contrast immediately gave me the idea for the shoot.
Dakota came out in delicate pink lace and white stockings, and suddenly the entire room changed. Against those deep curtains and the emerald-green chair, her pale skin and soft styling almost seemed illuminated. She looked innocent for about five seconds… and then came that little Dakota smile. 😈
Photographing her is fun because she understands exactly how to play with the camera. One moment she gives you this sweet, doll-like expression, and in the next frame there is a completely different woman looking back at you confident, teasing and very aware of the effect she is creating. I started slowly, letting her explore the room rather than forcing poses. The green chair became our little playground.
She climbed over it, stretched across it, turned around it, disappeared behind it and came back into my frame again. Every few minutes I found another angle that made me forget the idea I had planned before. That is when a photoshoot becomes interesting for me. You stop thinking, I need this pose, then this pose, then this shot. Instead, you begin following the model. Dakota kept giving me tiny invitations a glance over her shoulder, a mischievous smile, a sudden change of posture. I followed with the camera, moving around her, looking for those moments between the poses.
Those are often my favorite photographs because they feel less arranged and much more alive. As the shoot continued, the soft pink lingerie slowly disappeared and the atmosphere became more daring, but I wanted to keep the same visual language: beautiful light, strong shadows, elegant lines and Dakota always emerging from that dark room as the brightest thing inside it.
The title Don’t Let Me Fade feels strangely perfect for this set. Because there was absolutely no chance Dakota was going to fade into the background. She completely owned it. And looking through the finished photographs afterwards, I remembered exactly why I enjoy shoots like this so much. A simple hotel room, one beautiful chair, a little light, a model who wants to play and suddenly you have your own private adventure happening frame by frame.
